India is proud to host this years Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi. The first Commonwealth Games was held in the year 1930 in Hamilton in Canada. At that time, 400 athletes from 11 different countries participated in this prestigious event. From then on, Commonwealth Games are held after every four years. However, it was withheld during the years 1942 and 1946 due to the two World Wars. Ever since it was started, the Commonwealth Games have gained immense popularity throughout the world.

History of Commonwealth Games: 

The concept of establishing the Commonwealth Games originated after the rebirth of the Olympic Games. Ashley Cooper in 1891 took the initiative and proposed a sporting competition by bringing together the members of the British Empire. It was initially termed as the ‘Festival of Empire’. There was however, no progress on the games until 1928. The first official Commonwealth Games was held in Hamilton in 1930, after the revival of the Empire meetings. It was then referred to as the ‘British Empire Games’. The games have since then been, conducted after every four years. The games were also known by the name of ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ and ‘British Commonwealth Games’ in two respective periods. In the 1978 Games in Edmonton, the game was finally renamed as the Commonwealth Games. 

Date for Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi

This is an extremely prestigious event and it is an honor for the host country. The event is scheduled to be held from 3rd October to 14th October, 2010. It is interesting to note that India has won this privilege by surpassing Canada 46 votes as opposed to 22 at the CGF General Assembly. It was held at Mont-ago Bay in November 2003.

Logo & its Significance

The Ashoka Chakra will be used as the logo of the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi. The Ashoka Chakra symbolizes freedom, power and unity. The logo was publicly announced on 6th January, 2008. It is interesting to note that the logo uses spirals which move in the upward direction. This signifies India’s ascent as a global power. Besides, it also bears testimony to the fact that India is gradually evolving to a modern nation as opposed to its being a traditional country. 

Over 8,500 athletes from 85 nations across the world will be participating in the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi. To this effect, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been instrumental in organizing a modern Games village. It has been constructed near the Akshardham Temple spanning over an area of 63.5 hectares. It has been estimated that a huge amount of $230.7 million has been spent for the construction of this project.

Effect on Indian Tourism Industry

The tourism industry in India will receive an impetus due to the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi. Numerous tourists will come to India for witnessing this gala event. This will definitely prove to be conducive to the travel and tourism industry and help the government a lot to earn foreign revenue.

The Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi is going to play a major role in not only boasting the image of the country but, also in flourishing up the Indian Tourism Industry. Around two million foreign tourists and 3.5 million national tourists are believed to be gathering up in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games 2010. Preparations are going on in full fledged to accommodate the 8, 500 participants in the new and modern Games village. The village is being constructed near the famous Akshardham Temple, along the banks of the Yamuna River.
